1998 A result of Leonid

Radiation Point from Video Images

We, members of Murakami Amateur Astronomy Association and Japan Planetarium Lab. Inc. staff, observed Leonid at Akagi Mountain of Gumma Prefecture in Japan.
Our member are Y.Itagaki, F.Ito, T.Sawado, T.Matsuta, T.Murohasi of Murakami Amateur Astronomy Association; Shigemi Numazawa and Nanayo Wakiya of Japan Planetarium Lab..
At all times, 4 members gazed at the sky.

We started our observation at 23h local time (17 Nov. 14h Universal Time).
During 14:00-15:00UT, we counted 16 Leonid meteors and 20% of them are brighter than -2 magnitude.
Then, though the number of Leonid meteors increased, all of us felt the peak time had already past.
In a hour from 18:00UT to 19:00UT, it was a maximum that we caught 67 Leonid per hour. The ratio of very bright meteor, that is one brighter than -2, decreased to 10%.
From around 19:00UT, the cloud began to float the sky and covered all sky until about 20:00UT.
Then the dawn had come, so we finished observation.

We have observed meteor shower for more than 20 years.
But it was first experience to look so many fireballs as this Leonid.
Meteor rate was less than the peak time of Perseid or Geminid.
But at 18:38UT, we counted 7 Leonid for just one minute.
